5 Signs You Have Chosen the Wrong Degree

Picking a degree and starting college seems like a simple thing to do, right? Wrong. Getting a degree takes time and money. So if you aren’t convinced that what you are studying is what you want, you have to keep in mind that you might be investing valuable resources into something you don’t care about. Choosing the wrong degree is more common than you think. Plenty of students don’t know which career they should follow because they never gave it much thought when they were in school. Years later, they realize their mistake, but by then, it’s too late. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent that from happening. Read on the following signs and find out if you have to change degrees while there’s still time.

1. The work is boring

It’s a fact that not everything about your chosen degree is going to be fun. Often, you will experience plenty of challenges, and the desire to keep working on it might wane. However, there should be something about it that excites you or gets your attention. If you find all subjects boring and uninteresting, you may have to consider studying something else.

2. Your family chose it

It isn’t a secret that many students pick a specific degree only because their parents or relatives forced them to study it. It could be that the parents wanted them to study a career that promised a high income. Another reason is a long family history of following a profession such as doctors, lawyers, and engineers. Still, no matter the reason, you should always go after a field that interests you, not someone else.

3. You are miserable

Studying a degree can be difficult and stressful even if you like it. Taking hard tests invariably takes its toll and can lead to frustration. That’s a normal part of the process. That said, you shouldn’t be miserable all the time. If instead of feeling a sense of accomplishment after completing a project, you feel drained and exhausted, that’s a possible sign you chose the wrong degree.

4. There is something else you like

Not many people know what they want to study when they begin college. For the most part, they follow the advice of someone else, usually the parents, and end up changing their goal after one or two years. If you have the urge or feel passionate about a path that is different from the one you are on, you may have to reconsider the degree you are pursuing.

5. You never talk about it

When you like something, you can’t help but talk about it to almost everyone you encounter. This also applies to careers and degrees. If a friend asks you about the courses you took or are taking, you are likely to come up with an elaborate response unless you have no interest in the subject. The lack of motivation to explain anything related to what you are studying might indicate you don’t care about it.

As you can see, picking the right degree is not a simple task. You have to take the time and analyze if your current path is what you truly want. Consider all the signs mentioned above and determine if you agree with them. That being the case, go for it and pick another degree. You will be happy that you did.
