In a typical operating system, when you delete a file it is not physically erased. All that happens is that the operating system “forgets” about it by deleting its entry from a catalog. It just marks that the space occupied by the file is available. This means that the data is still physically stored on your device and can be recovered by using specialized software or hardware.
If you want to be certain that what you delete cannot be recovered, Hardwipe is good for the job. Its name suggests that data is erased at hardware level. It comes with seven wiping methods. By default, the random overwrite with one pass is used. This ensures that data cannot be recovered using a software solution. To be 99.99% certain that it cannot be recovered using special devices either, Gutmann method can be used (overwrites data 35 times consecutively).
If you want to sell your hard-drive or computer, the entire drive can be “hardwiped” and you won’t have to worry that someone will recover sensitive data (like bank account details, passwords, personal photos, etc).
Deleting large blocks of data can take a long time. That does not mean that your PC will slow up because Hardwipe can automatically adjust its writing priority.
